While their minds wander off into a hidden realm of dreams, the dozing commuters in Nathalie Latham’s poetic video projection Sleeping Angels are progressing through real space at the same time. Often spending up to four hours a day on the trains, these travellers have created their own private space and time bubble, in apparent oblivion to their surroundings.

Filmed on one of the most polluted days last October, EATING UP BEIJING is reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink paintings. However, Latham shows that it is pollution rather mist that is filling the poetic landscape of today´s China.

The most difficult part of my father’s funeral was not being allowed to give a speech. There’s a slice of family dynamics in the middle of immense grief. Exactly a year after his funeral, I dreamt that I was speaking all the words I had wanted, through water. No one could hear me. Feeling forever silenced.

 

THE GIFT OF 10 000 SARIS

Filmed at Sri Narayani Peedam, Thirumalakoidi, Tamil Nadu in South India at the occasion of Sri Sakthi Amma's 30th birthday when 10 000 saris where given out to the local women. The women walked from afar and waited for hours to receive their sacred gift.

BEIJING YOU HAVE ALREADY DISAPPEARED

Filmed in downtown Beijing shortly after a block of hutong (traditional housing) had been demolished, in preparation for high end appartments and the Olympic Games. The title comes from a Beijing born and bred artist, who wrote these very words anonymously as something he deeply felt, but couldn´t say. Dance by Yanan.
